The observation of the emerging society, the scientific and techno-logical paradigm, the electronic media, new digital tools and the dif-ferent behaviours exhibited by their users, involves an adequate transposition of concepts from traditional media to new communica-tion spaces. The OpenDeusto initiative is intended as a permanent space for observation, reflection and use of new digital models for the benefit of individuals. This ambitious project involves a number of actions aimed at creating digital identity, by enabling new com-munication spaces from which to interact, building on values and competences, and creating a community within the sphere of the University of Deusto.
University Of Deusto Education Model
The OpenDeusto initiative is based on the philosophy and contents of the University of Deusto Education Model, which has developed an autonomous and significant teaching/learning model based on competences and values.
Since the signing of the Bologna Declaration in 1999, UD has gone a long way in the pursuit of teaching excellence, which has placed our university in a leading position internationally in this field.
The University of Deusto accepted the challenge posed by the European Union to create a European Higher Education Area, and it was the first university to implement a pilot scheme to test the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) in five degrees from the 2002-03 to 2009 academic years. The University of Deusto has been the first Spanish university to obtain the ECTS certificate awarded by the European Commission.
In the 2000-01 academic year, the Board of Governors of the University of Deusto approved the Pedagogical Framework, which described the principles of academic action, the new role to be played by the teaching staff, and a model that places a special emphasis on achieving an autonomous and significant learning process by students. Following the publication of this general framework that comprises both teaching and students, other goals in the pursuit of the required teaching excellence were gradually achieved.
The teaching model known as University of Deusto Education Model (MFUD, is based on a model focused on experience (Kolb et al, 1976), and on St Ignatius’ teaching methods (Gil Coria, 1999). This points out some interesting aspects that strengthen internal reflection and awareness on learning itself and its consequences. The University of Deusto Education Model is made up of five stages: experiential context, thoughtful observation, conceptualisation, active experimentation, and personal, educational and summative evaluation.
A programme of 35 generic or transversal competences that were operationally defined was devised, establishing three levels of scope for them. Each level is assessed through five indicators and each indicator has five descriptors that are used to assess competences. Two editions of this competence development were published in Spanish, and this assessment handbook is currently being used by several Spanish and Latin American universities. Last academic year, it was also published in English and Basque.
More than thirty years ago, the University of Deusto started research on the development of values. At present, research is still being carried out on values based on the Ledesma-Kolvenbach Paradigm, which describes four main dimensions of values: utilitas, iustitia, humanitas and fides. Based on this paradigm, a work plan has been devised that takes into account four different aspects: institutional, curricular, extracurricular and research aspects.
This project allows to involve the whole University Community in the development of values from different perspectives in a common and shared project. This project is still in its early stages, but we consider that, according to the results that are being obtained, it can be transferred to the new digital communication spaces.
